Wolf River Stream and Tributary Clean Up

Saturday, September 18, from 9-11 a.m. Join your friends and neighbors, the Conservancy and Clean Memphis in cleaning up Wolf River streams and tributaries. Neighborhood, corporate, school and church groups and volunteers are welcome! For more information, call 452-6500 or visit www.wolfriver.org.

Wolf River Free Canoe and Raft Rides

Saturday, October 2, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. the Wolf River Conservancy will offer free canoe and raft rides along the Wolf River blueway trail launching from Kennedy Park. A river stroll along sandbars will be offered in conjunction with the river trips. Information and sign up will be available at Wolf River Day or go to www.wolfriver.org after 9/25.

The Conservancy offers numerous community service, educational and recreational activities for people who desire a more “hands-on” experience and want to help enhance, learn more about or simply enjoy the Wolf River and its environs—see our Activity Schedule at http://wolfriver.org.

Teachers and school leaders are going to be held to new standards of accountability—which would in turn empower Memphis City Schools to meet testing standards and to graduate far more college-ready students.

A bit of background–a team of 8 Leadership Academy Fellows and myself partnered with the Wolf River Conservancy to give them the Capacity to make this happen.  It’s been a really tremendous experience working with the Conservancy to help them deliver on their mission in a big way.  The Wolf River is a community treasure that runs through so many of our neighborhoods.  We need to be excited about the Wolf River, and Wolf River Day: It’s Cool to Go Green will accomplish just that.  Stay tuned for coverage on the radio and on WMC-TV.

A small subset of our citizenry, depending upon your background, find abuse to be a justifiable everyday occurrence.  Whether it’s physical, emotional, and/or mental, abuse is still abuse at its very fundamental form.  You could make the debate whether the abusee should return to their abuser or not.  I think many people use their own personal experiences to try to influence the abused to not return to that environment. Sometimes, it is harder to convince the abusee that the situation and behavior is fundamentally unacceptable because with time the individual, typically, begins to rationalize the behavior. Yet, I believe the  better approach would be to attack the very voices in their minds. What have you heard from the abused?  Shares your personal (my friends told me :) ) stories of how you have heard people rationalize the deviant behavior.
