It’s hard to think of a more fantastic time for Memphis City Schools. First, changed legislation this summer literally doubled the number of charter schools allowed in the Memphis area. Good charters empower students to achieve and model the way for the kinds of educational forms that, if applied universally, would drastically improve student achievement in our public schools. Later this summer, we learned about the $100 million from the Gates Foundation. This partnership with the Gates Foundation will allow MCS to make ambitious positive changes to the way it goes about hiring and retaining excellent teachers and principals. Teachers and school leaders are going to be held to new standards of accountability—which would in turn empower Memphis City Schools to meet testing standards and to graduate far more college-ready students.

A bit of background–a team of 8 Leadership Academy Fellows and myself partnered with the Wolf River Conservancy to give them the Capacity to make this happen. It’s been a really tremendous experience working with the Conservancy to help them deliver on their mission in a big way. The Wolf River is a community treasure that runs through so many of our neighborhoods. We need to be excited about the Wolf River, and Wolf River Day: It’s Cool to Go Green will accomplish just that. Stay tuned for coverage on the radio and on WMC-TV.

A small subset of our citizenry, depending upon your background, find abuse to be a justifiable everyday occurrence. Whether it’s physical, emotional, and/or mental, abuse is still abuse at its very fundamental form. You could make the debate whether the abusee should return to their abuser or not. I think many people use their own personal experiences to try to influence the abused to not return to that environment. Sometimes, it is harder to convince the abusee that the situation and behavior is fundamentally unacceptable because with time the individual, typically, begins to rationalize the behavior. Yet, I believe the better approach would be to attack the very voices in their minds. What have you heard from the abused? Shares your personal (my friends told me ) stories of how you have heard people rationalize the deviant behavior.
