So along with 18,000+ fellow Memphians and Tiger fans (excluding the 5,000 who unfortunately couldn’t get in), we packed the FedEx Forum last Friday night to check out our 2009-2010 UM Tiger basketball teams. And it was even more exciting that I’d anticipated. The Spirit Squad and pep band helped generate the mood as we [...]

Once again my friend Renee Graves has unearthed a darkly comical musical for my enjoyment (she is, after all, the one who first made me aware of Bat Boy: The Musical a fewish years ago). And this one is being performed locally (as opposed to Bat Boy, alas)! More specifically, Germantown Community Theatre is in [...]

Another great art exhibition at Caritas Village: a juried group show of local artists that celebrates the bridges of love and trust that connect disparate members of our community. Even more exciting is that this project is presented by both Caritas Village and the National Civil Rights Museum! Art lovers, please mark your calendars for [...]

Converting oil from cafeterias (ah, memories of Tiger Den!!) into biodiesel for use in campus vehicles and engines. Transforming West Hall into the first and most sustainable public building in Tennessee. Cultivating fresh produce through campus gardens. I’m so proud of my alma mater! And I’m excited to see these sorts of sustainable practice initiatives [...]

A Binghampton community center and coffee shop with a mission to break down walls of hostility between and among neighboring cultures and build bridges of love and trust between the rich and those made poor. A talented photographer whose life centered around his family and his spiritual community. The opening reception for the Glenn Booth [...]

Who needs SXSW when we have Gonerfest? Gonerfest 6 kicks off tonight and runs through Saturday, and if the crazy musical lineup below isn’t enough to hook you, there are also DJs and BBQ-and did I mention that the events that are actually at Goner Records are free? Find out more here, and check out [...]

I’m glad I slowed down enough to read through my inbox thoroughly, because I found this: the inaugural Pink Tie Event from Baptist Memorial Health Care and The Avenue Carriage Crossing honoring breast cancer survivors, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Fun plus a worthy cause makes a good excuse to head to a [...]

I lost count long ago of the visits I’ve made to the Lamplighter. A cold PBR, the inevitable Nancy Sinatra on the jukebox, and a crowd of some of the most creative-and memorable- Memphians around. In fact, the final stop on my first date with my husband involved a pitcher of Olympia… served by none [...]

The incomparable Sister Myotis is headed to New York City! Help us all! And help us give her a proper sendoff at Voices of the South‘s new space at First Congo, TheatreSouth. Three weekends only* to be saved before this Memphis original sets her sights on New York City: The divine deaconess of Ecclesiastical splendor [...]

As I was sifting through summer photos (for our sorely neglected Shutterfly account) I realized just how many cool places there were to take the kids in order to beat- or at least ignore- the Memphis heat. First there was the members’ preview of the Birds and Bees exhibit at the country’s #1 Memphis Zoo. [...]
