Here’s a great opportunity — Memphis’ fourth BarCamp will be this Saturday, November 12, at Southwest Tennessee Community College, 5983 Macon Cove.

What’s BarCamp? It’s a tech conference that’s actually an unconference. If you’ve got an idea, technique or expertise you’d like to share, come early and sign up to present. Topics are voted on by attendees and the ideas that receive the most votes will be presented. There’s plenty of time for networking and you can be sure you’ll meet at least one person with whom you share a common interest.

If you don’t want to present, that’s ok, too. Just come and enjoy the casual atmosphere, listen and learn.

Here are a few of the topics that have already been submitted — and we’re sure there will be even more coming in this week:

ThinkFactory: Gamestorming to break through design challenges

Gamification of the Workplace

Google Analytics

LinkedIn for Professionals

Scale or Fail – Deploy your apps in the cloud

Mobile Usability Testing: Hands-on Demo Session

Becoming a better web developer by being lazier: using the tools at your disposal to more efficiently use your time.

Mobile Audience Research: Sometimes you just gotta be there…

Social Media or Social Mania?

In search of the magic bullet

iPhone & Android site use (it’s different)

Online Media Plan development

Gamification & Triggers

Unity 3D in the Enterprise (not just for games)

Smart/Responsive Mobile Design

CoffeeScript – This ain’t your daddy’s java, Dude

The hottest platform in web development: node.js

There will be free wifi; feel free to bring your laptop and mobile devices. The cost varies from student rate (pay as you can) to corporate rate. Register here and choose what you pay — we’re on the honor system.

The day will kick off at about 8:30 a.m. and wrap up at 4:30 p.m. There will be snacks throughout the day and lunch is provided. Dress is come-as-you-are comfortable and casual.

Volunteers spent the bulk of their weekend at Emerge Memphis, with a few brave souls coding throughout the night.

Four charities participated and the organizations received free help with solutions from better contact management to a redesigned website and social media training. The event was well-organized by cofounders Brian Swanson, Adam Robertson and the rest of their team, who were all present throughout the weekend to provide technical advice, consulting and programming expertise.

The first GiveCamp was so successful, we’re planning another one in June. If you weren’t involved, you missed a great opportunity to give back to the community and use your skills to help others who are less fortunate.

Here’s a testimonial from one of our charities, Basic Intervention. Executive Director Terri Strong said she felt as if she had received a makeover. Hear Terri describe her GiveCamp experience in her own words:

That’s the idea. Now it’s time to give back — and here’s your chance.

This weekend, October 21 – 23, Memphis will hold its first GiveCamp at Emerge Memphis in Downtown’s South Main area.

How does it work?

Technology professionals — graphic designers, software developers, database administrators, marketers and web strategists will volunteer their time to provide solutions for nonprofit organizations, who do vital work for the common good, but lack the resources, personnel and expertise to do it efficiently and to best use the latest technology.

GiveCamp will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21 with sign-in and introductions. We’ll get down to coding at about 7:00 p.m. and stop when the caffeine runs out. Saturday will begin with breakfast and coffee and we’ll work into the evening as needed. On Sunday, there will be a 2:00 p.m. code freeze, after which we’ll finalize deployments and prepare to present our work to the public at 5:00 p.m.

Registration is still open and we have a few available slots for both charities and volunteers, as we believe we have the bandwidth to complete additional projects. Please note that this may be a solid 48-hour commitment for some project teams.

The event is organized by Brian Swanson, IT consultant and owner of Purple Ant, a Memphis-based software and web development company and Adam Robertson, lead recruiter for the Memphis branch of Robert Half Technology.

If you’ve got tech skills, this is a great way to give back to the community — and it’ll be fun. If you’re a nonprofit and need technology-related help, register and we’ll find a team to help you.

Here’s how you can get involved:

I want to volunteer.

I’m a nonprofit — help me!

Follow GiveCamp on Twitter

What began in the summer of 1986 as a two-week mission camp for youth has grown into a year-round ministry that draws more than 1700 students from 30 states, who repair about 35 homes each year.

At its foundation are the teachings of Jesus Christ and His command to love and serve our neighbors. Volunteers do real construction work in the heat of a Memphis summer, but the work doesn’t stop with roofs, floors, walls and leaky plumbing. One Binghampton resident, whose house was in disrepair, admitted that she was initially not thrilled with the idea of a group of teenagers coming to her home. The group soon won her over as she was inspired by their hard work and encouragement. “They came to fix my house, but they fixed my heart, too,” she says about the young workers.

Executive Director Phillip Walkley has hundreds of stories just like these and describes SOS’ ministry as twofold. “Our first goal is to meet the needs of our community and provide repairs for economically-disadvantaged homeowners. At the same time, we invest in the lives of our student volunteers with mentors, guest speakers and Bible study to encourage and inspire them to love and serve others as God has called us to do.”

Though it may be hard to imagine teenagers lining up for the opportunity to stand on a Memphis roof in July, SOS has had to turn away eager volunteers and students rush to get in line to sign up at church youth group meetings.

I did SOS because I felt like it was the least I could to to spend a week of my summer helping a disadvantaged family. I was humbled as I realized that I don’t have to drive very far to experience intense poverty — it’s a lot closer than you can begin to imagine when you’re locked away in your middle-class suburban home.
— High school SOS participant

What does Walkley envision for the next 25 years of SOS? “As positive change has come to Binghampton, we’ll continue to work in the area and also hope to grow our work in Orange Mound. As approximately 98 percent of our campers are white, suburban upper-middle-class teenagers, we hope to engage more urban youth and bring a diverse group of young people together to work toward a common goal of reconciliation through service.”

Want to get involved? Here’s how:

Contact your local church and encourage them to support SOS. In addition to sending youth groups, many churches adopt a week of camp to serve the volunteers by providing frozen treats and serving meals.

Donate

Call SOS to arrange a tour and learn more about their work and ministry.

Never heard of BarCamp? Neither had I just two short years ago, but I’ve been to two and I’m hooked. It’s a great way to learn about emerging technology, meet lots of like-minded people and support LaunchMemphis’ efforts to grow the entrepreneurial and tech community in Memphis. It will happen this coming Saturday, November 13 at Emerge Memphis in Downtown Memphis’ South Main Historic District.

Here’s the FAQ:

Why is it called BarCamp? Is it a drinking game? Nope. Not a drinking game. Are you kidding? At 8:00 a.m.? Actually, according to Wikipedia, The name “BarCamp” is a playful allusion to the event’s origins, with reference to the hacker slang term, FOOBAR.* BarCamp arose as a spin-off of Foo Camp, an annual invitation-only participant-driven conference hosted by open source publishing luminary Tim O’Reilly. BarCamps have been held around the world in more than 350 cities worldwide. This is Memphis’ third.

What happens at BarCamp? It’s unlike any conference you’ve ever been to. In fact, it’s called an unconference, as the topics are decided by attendees on the day of the event. If you’d like to speak, come prepared to present on a topic that interests you — we’ll vote on all suggestions and the winners get presented. In this way, day is tailored to the needs of the audience. This year, our proposed topics range from QR Codes, HTML5 and location-based technology to music, marketing and Blogging 101. We’re adding new topics every day, not to mention the ones that will be submitted that day.

What’s the atmosphere like? Casual and laid back with lots of opportunity for discussion and interaction with other attendees. There is plenty of time between presentations and at lunch for networking and conversation. You will not leave empty-handed; in addition to new contacts and a head spinning with information, we have some generous sponsors who have provided great giveaways and door prizes. Sessions last 30 minutes, with 10 minutes for Q & A. We operate on the law of two feet; if you find that the session you’ve chosen is not suited to your needs, you have the right to use your two feet and escape.

What’s the schedule? Doors open at 7:30 a.m. for coffee, Continental breakfast and sign-in; last call for presentations is at 8:15 a.m. We’ll wrap up between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m. Complete detailed schedule is available on the BarCamp website. And don’t forget Friday night’s fun mixer at South of Beale.

Can I live blog/tweet? Please do! If you’re a blogger, you’ll love the Blog Haus, sponsored by Memphis Connect. We’ll have comfortable chairs, away from all the noise, where you can write that killer post or interview a new-found contact.

OK, I’m hooked; how do I sign up? For answers to any other questions go to the BarCamp website; if you’re sold and you just want to get it done, you can register here. The fee is a bargain at $45 for an individual, which covers snacks and drinks throughout the day, presentations and lunch, not to mention the cool prizes you just might win.

See you there!

*Acronym for, ahem — fouled up beyond all repair.

October has a special place in my heart as it’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This matters to me because in January 2011, I’ll be a 13-year survivor. According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, in the United States this year, more than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 39,840 will die from the disease.

Malignant is a scary word. I was only 39 when I was diagnosed, with daughters who were five and eight. My thoughts were horrifying — I have cancer. I’m going to die. My girls will grow up without a mother. But I was blessed — my tumor was discovered early and my doctor gave me a 97 percent chance of being cured after radiation treatment and five years on a drug called Tamoxifen. Others are not so fortunate.

Do you know someone who has been recently diagnosed? Here are a few ways you can help:

Lend moral support. My family, friends and groups from my church carried me through. They were there when I needed someone and encouraged me to rest and take care of myself.

Give practical help. Radiation treatment has few side effects but the primary one is exhaustion. Make dinner, take care of the kids or arrange for someone to clean her house. Offer to accompany her to appointments if you can and she wants company.

Offer encouragement. Do you know another survivor? I still remember how comforting it was to hear that someone’s mother, sister or friend was a 20-year survivor; to know that others had gone before me and survived. This is not the time to talk about your great aunt who died from the disease.

Be real. Unless you’ve been there, you have no idea what it’s like. Don’t pretend you do. Don’t try to cheer her up if she’s worried or anxious; those are natural feelings when you have a life-threatening disease — acknowledge them. Just listen and do your best to empathize without judging or making her feel as if she’s not coping well enough.

Distract her. Bring a book or DVD you know she’ll like, the latest mindless magazine, or something more profound if it fits her preferences. Catch her up on the latest gossip — give her something to get lost in, if only for a few minutes.

Honor her by participating in Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 30 at The Shops of Saddle Creek in Germantown.
