feedshungrychildThink world hunger is too big a problem for one person to make an impact? A Sunday School class from Christ United Methodist Church would say otherwise.

Inspired by a recent presentation on world hunger, the group approached Christ Methodist leadership and a new ministry, called Christ Feeds, was established. They provide prepackaged meals for urgent situations such as natural disasters and for ongoing needs.

Tomorrow, May 15, Christ Feeds will conduct what they call “a food packaging event to package 100,000 meals” at the church, located at 4488 Poplar Avenue in East Memphis. Volunteers are asked to donate $25 to cover food and shipping costs, with a maximum of $100 for a family, and work a one-hour shift between the hours of 8:00 a.m – 4:00 p.m. Workers will be assigned to tables of 10 – 12 people and will fill, weigh, seal and stack bags of rice, soy, dried vegetables and vitamins.

Marilyn Hughes, one of the founders, says, “We hope to make this not just a Christ Methodist effort; we want to involve other churches and the whole community.” Hughes hopes for 800 – 900 volunteers to help package meals tomorrow and the group plans additional events in the future.

Christ Feeds also accepts donations and offers business sponsorships. For more information about business sponsorships, call (901) 359-7159 or email Gwin Smith. Donations can be mailed to: Eric Angel, Missions Department, Christ United Methodist Church, 4488 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38117.
