OPEN FIVE – World Premiere Weekend

Atlanta Film Festival (April 18 & 19) & Indie Grits Festival (April 17)

OPEN FIVE_smallcover

Last summer we asked for support for our film OPEN FIVE by Kentucker Audley on Memphis Connect and the response was tremendous. Over 100 Memphians donated money and auction items, contributed locations and supplies, and wrote us their ‘Love Letter to Memphis’ to inspire ideas for the film.

Filmmaker Magazine featured us in their article ‘Slumpdays: Five Fundraising Success Stories from Today’s Down Economy’.  We could not have possibly made the film without the generosity of our contributors.

The film is a blend of reality and fiction, following the story of Jake, a struggling musician and his sidekick, Kentucker, a maker of “poor” films and what happens when two girls (Lucy and Rose) venture down to Memphis for a long weekend.

We are making the trip this weekend to Columbia, SC for the Indie Grits Festival Saturday and then on to the Atlanta Film Festival to screen both Sunday and Monday.  We will keep everyone updated of progress and the Memphis premiere date is TBD.

Kentucker Audley has a busy month, in addition to OPEN FIVE, he is also premiering his second feature film HOLY LAND in Memphis. (and hosting a screening of Happy Gilmore at The Brooks Thursday April 22. yes, you read that correctly)

HOLY LAND is a realistic character study of Cole, a twenty-something musician who leaves music and his hometown to work on a novel. Fueled by a $600 stimulus check from the government and a Hybrid Honda Civic, he takes a spontaneous trip across the country to visit old friends, new friends, and bad friends. The journey takes him from Memphis through Cedar Rapids hailstorms to Holy Land, Virginia, in search of amber waves of grain and possibly nothing at all.

HOLY LAND is hard to describe, you really just have to experience it for yourself.

HOMETOWN GLORY is a documentary by Ray Costa, who as a teenager in the seventies, was among the ranks of volunteers who risked their lives to protect their town.  The population of Germantown had swelled to 20,000 residents and the local teens were trained as firefighters.  During the firefighter’s strike in Memphis in 1978, the volunteers assisted the city and the same year traveled to Waverly, TN to offer aid in a the Union Tank Car explosion that took 16 lives including the town’s fire and police chiefs.

The documentary tells the story with archival footage, vintage photos, present day interviews, and reenactments.  Ray and many of the firefighters featured in the film will be in attendance.

In 1946 John Mazilli visited Magnolia, MIssissippi to meet the family of a fallen war buddy. With his visit he brought hope and change. His visit would prove to be the change of a lifetime for so many people, including himself.

The film was mostly shot at Davies Plantation and great lengths were taken to be authentic to the time period.

ONE CAME HOME is the first narrative feature film from Willie Bearden, who is well known for his documentaries covering Memphis history including the Victorian Village, Overton Park, origins of the blues, and the history of cotton in the Delta.
