Haha, my daughter was 4 and we went to see the Nutcracker. She lost her first tooth while waiting for the show to start.

My family never had the pleasure of going to the Orpheum when my brother and I were young. BUT, I dated a girl in high school and her father always had tickets to Orpheum shows. We got to see so many musicals and I still remember the excitement of seeing Cats for the first time.

Last year, we took my son to see Bob The Builder. I had recently give birth to our twin girls who will be a year old tomorrow. It was our last outing as just a threesome (me, daddy and our son). Grandma stayed home with one sister, the other was still in the hospital. He had SO much fun and just loved the show. I think mostly he enjoyed being the center of attention again for an evening.

My daughter loves going to the Orpheum because she likes getting dressed “fancy.” Her dad took her to see Magic Treehouse the Musical on a date, and she was so excited to wear a beautiful dress, shoes, jewerly, and purse. Her face is priceless as it lights up when curtain goes up.

When we were younger we would always take the bus downtown with our mother due to the fact we didn’t have a car. Every time we went downtown we would pass the Orpheum and the look on our face because we knew that this was a beautiful place from the outside we were just dying to go inside but my mother would never take us telling we had to pay. When I got in the 5th grade @ Whitehaven Elementary our class went to see a play called Momma I want to sing I had to beg my mother who had 5 kids and had 3 going to see the play to let me go, however she was able to apy for us all. I knew this was a grand place so I had to put on my best dress and had to have my hair done a certain way. I was so excited i couldn’t sleep that night. When we arrived that day in front of the Orpheum I was so excited the whole play I cried because the play was amazing and I was so happy to be there. My teacher thought something was wrong but I told her I always wanted to come and my mother couldn’t afford it and I finally had a chance to come. This is something I always cherished as a special moment.

As a professional musician, I travel all over the United States and see and perform in truly amazing spaces. As a new Memphis resident (2 years ago), my husband and I decided to see “Gladiator” at the Orpheum — and I was blown away by the entire experience. To see a classic movie in that amazing space was amazing — full of sights, sounds, smells, people — it was such fun and we always try to find a time to visit the Orpheum when I’m not on the road myself!

MY first trip to the Orpheum was with my son. He was only a year old, but he loved Blues Clues. I remember being nervous about him sitting through the show. I was pleasantly surprised when he was clapping and dancing through the entire show! It is certainly a day I will never forget!

We took our boys to see Dora and Diego Live 2 years ago with their best friends and their family. The show was amazing and it was magical to see their favorite characters alive before their eyes.

I am a foreign people and don’t have this gorgeous Orpheum in my country. I love musical a lot since I’ve started learning it. I want to bring my 33 months old son go Orpheum and enjoy music and story time with his idols—Dora, Kai-Lan, and wonder pets if possible! Also, it will be his first time to go inside and see around what Orpheum is. Thus, he gonna love it and want to go again and again!

I will always remember when my parents saved for months to take us all to see Annie – from great seats! A special memory.

As an elementary music teacher, I have taught the story of the Nutcracker to hundreds of students. So even before my own child was old enough to really understand the story, he was introduced to it. This Christmas, we were given tickets to see The Nutcracker at the Orpheum and it will go on record as my most favorite memory with my 4 year old, Adam. The moment the first mouse came on the stage, he began clapping uncontrollably, he was so excited. I had to remind him of audience manners a few times because he kept adding sound effects. He cuddled in my lap most of the show and eventually fell asleep on my shoulder, giving me a moment to cherish forever. But the highlight of the evening was going to the backstage door and Adam recognizing the Nutcracker, who was already in his plain clothes, but posed with us for a picture and made Adam feel like the most special child. Truly a wonderful memory!

My son has Autism. Taking him places poses unique challenges, particularly when there is a lot of sensory stimulation, but I want to give him a chance to experience life fully and I don’t always know what he will enjoy if I don’t take those chances. Bravely, I decided to take him to see Dora at The Orpheum. I braced myself before the show, prepared for anything, even if that meant leaving 10 minutes into the show. We navigated our way through the crowd to our seats in the Mezzanine and I pointed out all the beautiful sights, trying to keep him “in a happy place.” He squirmed, twirled, climbed and squealed from anxiety and I figured this might be a short experiment. The lights soon faded in the theater and the stage came to life. My son was completely drawn to the life unfolding before him on the stage. I watched him sit on the edge of his seat, fully engaged in the magic of the theater. Halfway through, he decided to stand. I thought to myself, here we go, he’s about to run. He didn’t. He stood still and quiet all the way through the end of the show and when the house lights came back on, so did he, at full speed once again. I have attempted to take him to shows at other places but have never had the same success that we had at The Orpheum that night. I don’t know exactly what made that particular experience so successful but it was a special night that I treasure in my memories because he was able to enjoy something that every child should have the opportunity to enjoy. I am sure it resides somewhere in a special place in his mind as well.

My favorite Orpheum memory happened when I was pregnant with my first child and began having contractions during a December performance of RENT. I will always have a special place in my heart for The Orpheum.

My husband and I decided CATS should be our first “show” so we went for our 2nd wedding anniversary. We got all dressed up and had great seats so when the cats ran through the aisle we could touch them. That show with the amazing costumes and music just sent us to another place for a moment. And the theater itself is gorgeous. The whole experience was amazing! We still have our poster hanging in the office. We can’t wait to take our son to his first show.

When we moved to Memphis, my husband and I would have date nights out for the Broadways Series. Now with two kids, we only make a show every once in awhile but I have taken my 5 year old to see the Nutcracker, Bob the Builder and a couple of the Family Series shows. It is wonderful to experience a live performance through his eyes.
