If you were asked to write your eulogy, how would it read?

Joe Carson (right) talks with a friend
The eulogy assignment was part of a small group Bible study that led the to Carsons re-evaluate their priorities. Kelli recalls. “We asked ourselves, with our kids nearly grown, what will the rest of our lives look like? A continuation of country club, travel, suburban privileged life? Or are we willing to invest in others?” After a month of intensely-focused prayer, the couple decided to sell Joe’s successful Bartlett dental practice to free them up for full-time ministry. It sold quickly and three weeks later, The Life Church’s senior pastor, John Siebeling, asked them to lead the church’s ministry to homeless persons.
As the Carsons explored downtown Memphis, they found a vacant parking lot, got the permission of the owner and began to serve meals. They now serve 50 – 100 persons each week. “It’s not just about the food,” says Joe. “It’s about relationships and food opens the door to establish those bonds. We don’t preach, we just love.” They make a special effort to learn their new friends’ names, because, as Joe explains, “When you have no home, you are beaten down. No one knows your name and you never feel validated. We try to create a life-giving atmosphere that’s about hope more than simply food and clothes.”

Volunteers serve meals downtown
Maybe you’re not in a position to leave your life’s work to serve full-time; few of us are. But all can minister in small ways. Start with one person, one need. Joe reminds us that, “every human being is created in the image of God and is valuable to Him. Take the time to befriend someone in need. Remind them that they matter.”
