I recently learned of Operation Broken Silence, a local organization that is involved with- among other things -charity:water, a nonprofit  featured on CNNForbes and the New York Times. From their site:

Almost a billion people on the planet don’t have access to clean drinking water. That’s one in eight of us. charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. 100% of public donations directly fund water projects.

On the local front, Operation Broken Silence has committed to raise $4000 through the end of the year that will help ensure that charity:water can bring wells and healthy water to more African villages.  Phase I of their work is currently underway, with a goal of $1000 by March 30. Toward that end, Operation Broken Silence hosts Operation Clean: Water this weekend:

Date: Saturday, February 20, 2010

Time: 4:00pm – 7:00pm

Location: First Evangelical Church, 735 Ridge Lake Boulevard, Memphis, TN

Admission Price: Free

Event Details: After viewing Hotel Rwanda, visiters to the event will be able to participate and talk with the Operation Broken Silence staff about how they can help save lives in Africa with charity:water! Come and learn about how clean water wells play a key role in preventing genocide and saving lives in war-ravaged regions of Africa.

You will also be able to donate online or in cash to our yearly fundraising goal of $4,000 for charity:water! 100% of funds raised go directly to charity:water!
