The front door at Manna House
The Commercial Appeal did a great feature story on Manna House, where I volunteer when I’m able. I love that Manna House is entirely run by volunteers, led by Pete Gathje and Kathleen Kruczek. Pete and Kathleen model grace as they spend time and develop relationships with homeless and needy persons.
I’ve written about my own experiences at Manna House here and here.
I snapped this photo of the door because I think it says a lot about the values of Manna House: the dignity of each human being, their standing — equal to you and me and all the rest of us — as a child of God regardless of their circumstances. A front door would have been good enough; this front door goes beyond good enough. Some might have considered the mere availability of a bathroom and shower good enough — but the bathrooms at Manna House are spotless. It’s one thing to serve the homeless; it’s quite another to serve them with excellence. That’s what Pete and Kathleen do, but Wendi Thomas says it better than I do, so read the Commercial Appeal article.

MemphisConnect is a partnership between The Leadership Academy, MemphisED and Simple Focus. We provide a gathering place for diverse Memphians to share the opportunities, initiatives and activities that inspire them to make Memphis home.
MemphisConnect is always looking for people who are passionate about Memphis and want to help move our community forward. Get in touch if you have a story for us to share, of if you want to write for us!
