Missing Memphis Abroad

Every time I leave Tennessee for an extended period of time I realize I miss Memphis.  Each time it shocks me.  It takes me by surprise because I never think I will miss the city.

But I do.

Every time.  Especially when I start telling people where I’m from.  It’s hard to explain the complicated and beautiful city that many people can only relate to Elvis.  (And they all usually do.  At least they know something!)  Every conversation about where I’m from leads to the inevitable feeling I have of missing the people that understand and love the city like I do.  The people who know that Elvis and our other sorted history is only part of the picture.  The people who know where to find the best BBQ or major events from years past or why Tigers basketball is awesome.

I’ve been abroad for a month now and it won’t be my last time leaving Memphis.  I’m growing used to the role of city ambassador, speaking up for the city when people ask whether or not I like it.  It’s a necessary role.  It’s one that needs to exist in the city and outside of it.  And I know that wherever I end up I’ll always be a fan of Memphis and speak about it fondly.
