Indie Memphis. B side. Flipside. Whatever the moniker, we know that our city has a distinct soul shaped largely by our irrepressible creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, by a determination to forge a new path. After all, cultural icon FedEx was once a startup, Elvis an upstart.

And even the New York Times knows it. In today’s “Roll Over, Elvis. Meet Indie Memphis,” Melena Ryzik lauds some of our less mainstream treasures, including Wild Bill’s, Minglewood Hall, Mollie Fontaine, Odessa, and Ernestine & Hazel’s:

This is indie Memphis, a long way from the tourist crush of Beale Street and Graceland, in spirit if not in actual distance. Midtown, just a short drive from a downtown famous for its blues, jazz and barbecue hounds, is its hipster epicenter, a diverse area that is now home to posh cocktail bars as well as divey rock clubs and longstanding juke joints. It parties late, very late, and stays friendly through the night.

Check out the article if you haven’t already! Word is definitely spreading that rich cultural heritage coupled with a pioneering spirit results in a truly remarkable city, one we are proud to make our city of choice.
