With the future of the fairgrounds uncertain, Memphis Roller Derby is in search of a new home.
Memphis Roller Derby has been a part of the community for four years. The league is made up of a variety of extraordinary women from different backgrounds (there are teachers, students, mothers, office workers, bartenders, and artists among the derby’s ranks). The league is active in the community and frequently takes part in parades, festivals, fundraisers and charity events.
The league has made its home at the House of Bruise (aka the Youth Building) for the past two years, holding twice-weekly practices and bouts there. Now, with the planned demolition of the buildings at the Fairgrounds, the roller derby’s lease on the building has not been renewed.
But now, Memphis Roller Derby needs your help.
FunQuest in Collierville has been kind enough to offer us a temporary place to have practices and bouts, but Memphis Roller Derby is in search of a permanent home. The perfect home for us would be a large, open expanse without poles. The minimum dimensions for the track area are 107 feet by 75 feet. Overall we are looking for 12,000 to 15,000 square feet with restrooms and parking.
Kerry Crawford Trisler skates for Memphis Roller Derby’s Women of Mass Destruction as “Lady Problems”. When she’s not lacing up her quad skates, she writes the I Love Memphis Blog, which is dedicated to showing all of the things to love about Memphis.
Any suggestions to help these ladies find a happy home? Please post a comment here, contact MRD through their site, or email Kerry directly.
MemphisConnect is a partnership between The Leadership Academy, MemphisED and Simple Focus. We provide a gathering place for diverse Memphians to share the opportunities, initiatives and activities that inspire them to make Memphis home.
MemphisConnect is always looking for people who are passionate about Memphis and want to help move our community forward. Get in touch if you have a story for us to share, of if you want to write for us!
