Schools, schools, scools. that is and always will be the biggest issue. How do you handle the two school systems. One that is a disgrace and broken. And one that works pretty good. If you merge the Memphis City School system with Shelby county then it will drag the Shelby system down into the abyss. There is no getting around this issue. I say start slowly and see where it goes with the promise that schools are NOT on the table. Start with a Fire and Police merger. Then try city and county roads…you know, something easy that will work before jumping in feet first.
I agree the school systems dilemma is a major concern, however there is a more encompassing concern overall. Memphis does not manage their city or their schools well. If Shelby county merges with them, who is in charge of managing then? Anyone involved in city government currently should be banned and the county should control the decisions. Also, the incorporated cities government’s would become nonfactors in decisions so I don’t see how you can ever get Collierville, Germantown, Bartlett, etc. to agree to a merger. I live in Germantown and will definitely vote no and if it were to pass you’d see a mass exodus of people like me who pay taxes leave the county. Do you want all of Shelby county to end up like the city of Memphis?
