Holiday shopping is upon us, and we have a question for you:

What are your favorite gift items that are produced locally, or that benefit locally owned businesses or organizations??

My top three favorites are: 1) St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Gift Shop (you can knock out a ton of holiday shopping here), 2) The Ornamental Metal Museum Gift Shop (beautiful, unique jewlery, serving dishes, and art), and 3) Muse on S. Main.

There’s something about a Sun Studios T-shirt that really get a lot of things done when it comes to gift giving. The studio’s cool and cache is so easily recognizable, it’s an easy Memphis export. It reminds people of one of many great things that have happened here, further defines the city’s profile.
All of that stuff hits them when you give them a Sun T-shirt and I can always tell they’ll proudly don it. Nothing like a walking, talking Memphis billboard.
Also, the logo T-shirt just looks so damned good.

We love one-of-a-kind items from Memphis artists and artisans (like the awesome jewelry I bought last weekend at the MCA holiday bazaar). We’re going to check out Harvest the Holidays at the Memphis Farmers Market on December 5.

The zoo has cute stuff for kids, like plush animal backpacks (our daughter wants the pink butterfly). Starry Nights has a holiday CD that includes local musicians, and a super soft Sparkle the Fox stuffed animal.

Tickets to local cultural arts performances and gift certificates to locally owned restaurants have always made me happy! And I have a subscription to Edible Memphis on my wish list this year…

Can’t wait to check out some of the other suggestions listed here as well!

In terms of full disclosure, even The Orpheum is my place of employment, I have been purchasing Broadway show and concert tickets as gifts ever since I moved to Memphis. Regardless of the occasion, I feel that tickets to a show really does set the tone for a fantastic evening on the town. It is a good stocking stuffer for sure.

But, I am also a fan of Delphinium for local gifts for the women in your life. The prices are affordable and they have a friendly staff.

And, if you are looking to buy a gift for me, just in case…I love the running gear at Breakaway and gift cards from Bari and Restaurant Iris.

A great thing about this town is that you really don’t have to think too hard or too much to buy local for your holiday shopping.

I really dig Stash knitting supply and yarn shop on Cooper. Locally produced yarns and kits. My daughters had a great experience.

The Collierville Historic Town Square is loaded with locally owned and operated shops with personalized and locally made gifts. I always get at least one thing for everyone there. I also feel good about supporting local!

FYI. Collierville’s Town Square Merchants are having another “Girls Night Out” THIS Thursday (Dec 3rd). Most shops are open till 8 with snacks and beverages. We are expecting carolers too :)

Broad Ave is having our first-ever Holiday Art walk on Friday, Dec. 4 from 6 – 9pm, and a lot of the galleries will be open. Odessa (2613 Broad) will feature work by a bunch of local artists at great prices! http://odessatheblog.wordpress.com/

Then, if you’re still in the market for an art market, check out the Brooks Museum’s Holiday Art Market on Sunday, Dec. 6 from 11am – 5pm. http://www.brooksmuseum.org

Both of those would be good bets in my book (hint hint, if you are reading, friends)!

One of the absolute best gifts you can give is the gift of music! And of course, the best music is from Memphis!

So check out a local record store and put some coin back into the pockets your favorite local musicians!

If you want a suggestion – check out Jump Back Jake, Amy Lavere, Star & Micey, Lucero, Amy LAvere, Cory Branan, John Paul Keith and the One Four Fives, Snowglobe, Blair Combest, The Warble, Twin Pilot, or The Bulletproof Vests – they’re all winners!!

If you’re looking to purchase local art, there will be a show this Saturday, December 19, 2009! It will be at Five in One (VINI for short). The location is 423 N. Watkins. It’s going to be loads of fun!
