Founded in 1876, this historic African American cemetery is overgrown with brush having been largely abandoned 40 years ago. Somewhere between 22,000 and 30,000 people are buried on the sprawling 17 acre site located on South Parkway at Pillow Street. You can help with the monthly clean up on Saturday, July 25, from 9:00 am – noon. Wear long pants, gloves, and sturdy shoes to guard against thorns, poison ivy, and bugs. Sign up on the Hands on Memphis/Volunteer Mid-South web site or contact the cemetery through its own site http://www.zioncemeteryproject.org/about.php
MemphisConnect is a partnership between The Leadership Academy, MemphisED and Simple Focus. We provide a gathering place for diverse Memphians to share the opportunities, initiatives and activities that inspire them to make Memphis home.
MemphisConnect is always looking for people who are passionate about Memphis and want to help move our community forward. Get in touch if you have a story for us to share, of if you want to write for us!
