Sun tans and the fresh air

Sun tans and the fresh air????? Yes, it’s that time to get “cranking” Memphis. That bicycle in the garage needs to be dusted off and ridden! I recently decided to take a weekend day off from trail running and break out my road bike and go for a ride around the city. Growing up in Memphis I’ve learned a lot of back streets around town that helps avoid traffic along with doing a few things right when it comes to riding a bicycle in the summer. So here are my top 10 things you need to know about riding this summer.
- Helmets – don’t be stupid. Get a helmet. And get the right one. Any bike shop in town will be glad to help you fit your head into the proper helmet.
- Hydration - It’s Memphis, pack water bottles……. Depending on the length of your ride, I suggest trying to drink every 20 minutes. Back when I was racing I would freeze two water bottles to increase my chances of drinking actual cold water while out on the road.
- Attire – if you are going to get in some serious miles, invest in a good pair of bike shorts. Good shorts will prevent many issues and provide a layer of comfort.
- Partners – riding by yourself can be rewarding and boring. Find a friend to ride with. It will increase your chances of riding again and will give you a chance to discuss the latest happenings in your life and in the city.
- Tune-ups – bikes are like cars. They need adjustments here and there. If something isn’t working or sounding correct take it to a local shop to get it checked out.
- Safety – always follow the rules of the road. Here is a great list of things from the League of American Bicycle. Don’t be scared to ask other cyclists routes they take to avoid traffic.
- Sunscreen – prevent sun damage. Use a sports sunscreen base.
- Fitting – so that bike just never felt right ey? Not a problem. Most people never take the time to get properly fitted on their bicycle! Stop by a bike shop (with your bike of course) and see about getting a proper fitting. It will prevent many aches down the road.
- Food – it’s hard to think about stomaching food sometimes while out cruising around but your body needs to be fed. Take a Cliff Bar with you if your ride is greater than 1 hour. Try to eat once an hour.
- Have fun! The bicycle is one of the greatest inventions of all time. Enjoy your time out on the open road!
So maybe you’re not ready to ride the Tour de France but there are some great local groups that get together and ride of all distances and paces. I know of two bike shops in town that host group rides:
RB Cyclery and Bikes Plus
There are also offroad trails to ride around town. Midsouth Trails has a great listing of area trails.
The city of Memphis has also marked streets around town that can take you on a local journey.
Have fun this summer Memphis out on your bicycle! Save gas!
