Reflections on mornings and the Wolf River Trails
-
How do you define morning? I’ve asked myself that question for the last two weeks and finally came to a definition/ realization of it last Thursday. And as the events this week unfold for Earth Day and the recognition of the natural capital we have, well it all sort of just fits. Being a runner, more specifically trail runner, I typically run the Wolf River Trails once a week. On any given Wednesday or a Thursday you’ll find me with a sleepy look on my face but enjoying the solitude of the morning. And as the weekly, constant reminders of the sun coming up breaking through the trees, bringing light to the darkened trail, and mindful awareness of the time and space I’ve found myself participating in. I’ve come to the realization……..this is morning to me. I can’t imagine a better place to be on a Memphis morning!
I thought more about that realization over the weekend. How great of a natural resource we have at our fingertips, Memphis. Over the years many people have wanted to destroy this reserve for the benefit of better movement of traffic. BUT we as a community said no! We need to be proud of these resources and use them in a well mannered, respectable way that preserves them for future generations.
And if you pay attention to things happening along the trail you’ll for sure catch the early morning deer herds leaping across the fields and trails. Not to mention the beautiful wildflowers springing up as well.
New to Memphis? Here is more information on the Wolf River Trails.

What a great post, and a great question to answer. Turns out mine is the moment, once left the house standing on my back porch when I’m about to work in the yard. The moment when I’m inhaling the out door air for the first time in the day. When I see the beauty and balance, irony and ego in my own backyard.
Very inspiring. Thanks for making me think.
