I’m wearing my Memphis blue cordoroy jacket to work today even though I know that no one in Decatur, Illinois gets the significance of my favorite hue. I LOVE this time of year in Memphis and am feeling especially nostalgic as I prepare to watch tonight’s game against Missouri.
So here’s a question for anyone who has supported their favorite team from afar: Do I watch it alone at home where I have the freedom to stand 6 inches away from my TV and yell as much as I want? Or do I round up a few friends to cheer with me at the local sports pub knowing they aren’t really fans?
MemphisConnect is a partnership between The Leadership Academy, MemphisED and Simple Focus. We provide a gathering place for diverse Memphians to share the opportunities, initiatives and activities that inspire them to make Memphis home.
MemphisConnect is always looking for people who are passionate about Memphis and want to help move our community forward. Get in touch if you have a story for us to share, of if you want to write for us!
Amber – go to the bar and watch it with friends and be proud of the fact that you’re from Memphis! Tell them to make you some bbq spaghetti and a big sweet tea.
Hope you are doing well in IL!!

Hey! We miss you bunches in Memphis…especially at the JLM. For what it’s worth, I sat beside two very proud Illinois fans during the Grizzlies vs Celtics game last week. And the were DECKED OUT in blue and orange. So, I hope you decided to go out to watch the game – that makes you are real Memphis ambassador. ;o)
I did, in fact, go to the local pub with a group to watch Memphis. Although the outcome of the game was disappointing, I am proud to say that I recruited 5 new Memphis fans (2 of whom originally leaned toward Mizzou). I also kept in constant contact with my Memphis crew watching the game from a very spirited East End Grill … Thank heavens for BlackBerries! I would have hated to miss the images of everyone in Coach Cal masks and Elvis lambchops… Memphis fans are like none other!!
Amber I live in Roscoe Illinois now and found myself cheering for the Tigers once again….. I have my Tennessee state flag and U of M flag flying proudly in my front yard
