Did you know that Memphis has a public radio controlled plane flying field? Located on the east end of the Shelby Farms Park, there is a small grass runway, a picnic table, and an informational kiosk at the only local “public” flying area. On a windless day, you may look to the north of Walnut Grove and see all types of model airplanes soaring over the eastern end of the park.
Although the only restriction to use of the field is that pilots must be members of the American Model Association (AMA), there are no fees or dues for the use of the field. If you want to drive to the field, you must obtain a special permit from the park’s visitor office for an annual fee of $25.
A pilot myself, I have enjoyed use of the field, but have equally enjoyed going out on a sunny afternoon and watching the “professionals” perform incredible stunts with their planes. The field is along the Tour de Wolf as well, so keep an eye out for low flyers!!!!

MemphisConnect is a partnership between The Leadership Academy, MemphisED and Simple Focus. We provide a gathering place for diverse Memphians to share the opportunities, initiatives and activities that inspire them to make Memphis home.
MemphisConnect is always looking for people who are passionate about Memphis and want to help move our community forward. Get in touch if you have a story for us to share, of if you want to write for us!
